Appearance
Leaves: Long, narrow, arching leaves with red or purple edges (hence the name “marginata”).
Stems: Woody, slender stems that can branch out as the plant matures.
Height: Indoors, it typically grows 4–6 feet tall, but outdoors in tropical climates, it can reach 15 feet or more.
Care Requirements
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Moderate watering. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot—ensure good drainage. Sensitive to fluoride in tap water; use filtered or distilled water if leaves develop brown tips.
Temperature & Humidity
Ideal temperature: 65°F–80°F (18°C–27°C).
Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Prefers moderate humidity but adapts to average household levels.
Soil & Fertilization
Well-draining potting mix (e.g., cactus/succulent soil with perlite).
Fertilize monthly in spring/summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer (diluted).
Maintenance
Trim yellow or brown leaves to maintain appearance.
Cut back stems to encourage bushier growth.
Common Issues & Solutions
Brown leaf tips → Low humidity, overwatering, or fluoride in water.
Yellow leaves → Overwatering or poor drainage.
Pests → Watch for spider mites, mealybugs (treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap).
Toxicity
Toxic to cats and dogs (contains saponins). Causes vomiting, drooling, or lethargy if ingested.
Propagation
Easily propagated via stem cuttings (place in water or soil).
Benefits
Air-purifying: Removes toxins like formaldehyde and xylene.
Aesthetic: Adds a tropical, architectural element to homes and offices.
